National Eye Sight Program
NNJS with the assistance of Indian Embassy has successfully implemented free eye health checking of school students studying in grade 1 to 10 and distribution of free spectacles to the needy accordingly, in Kathmandu valley and different parts of the country. This program was especially conducted in order to eliminate childhood blindness and visual impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors by distributing free spectacles to poor students, and for early identification and referral of children with other major types of eye health problems to eye hospitals/ centers for timely intervention.
With the objective of distributing free spectacles to 9300 students, Nepal India Friendship School Eye Health program was implemented from Sept 2007 to March 2008 in Kathmandu and Lalitpur along with other 13 districts i.e. Rautahat, Chitwan, Kailali, Morang, Kaski, Jhapa, Rupandehi, Palpa, Dang, Dhanusha, Gulmi, Baglung and Banke. During this period, about 53,200 students of 84 private and government schools in 2 districts of Kathmandu valley were examined and 4844 were distributed free spectacles. Similarly, 119650 students outside the valley were examined and 3951 students were distributed free spectacles. Altogether, a total of 172850 students were examined in the country and 8795 were distributed free spectacles.
This year a total of 9300 students were targeted to distribute spectacles and about 94% of the target has been fulfilled. The reason for not being able to cover the remaining 6% of the target is due to Terai strike, and political instability causing the schools closed, and limitation of time.
