JICA Partnership Program
A project agreement was signed between NNJS, AOCA and SWC on January 28th, 2007 to start the project "Strengthening Eye Care System in Nepal" under JICA
Partnership Program. There are 3 activities under this program:
- To make accessibility of Phacoemulsification
 Master Trainers, Phaco Traning
service in all eye
hospitals of the country
- Continue Medical Education
Programme for Ophthalmic
Assistants (OAs).
- Development of IEC materials
and basic ophthalmic manuals
for grassroots level primary
health care personnel and train
them in primary eye care.
Under activity 1
Four Ophthalmologists from
different eye care institutions were
trained as master trainers for Phaco
surgery in Japan. The names of
those ophthalmologists are:
- Dr. Basant Raj Sharma
- Dr. Indra Man Maharjan
- Dr. Kamal Bahadur Khadka
- Dr. Jyoti Baba Shrestha

training centers were established
one each at Nepal Eye Hospital and
Himalaya Eye Hospital, and till now
two batches of training have been
finished one each at both the training
centres.

Management Technique in LAICO,
India.

Hospital, and under this program
four participants listed below
received the training.

 Ophthalmic Assistants undergoing maintenance training
following activities were carried out:
Training of Trainers (TOT):
A TOT was organized from
May 7 to 13, 2007 for 12 OAs
working at different eye hospitals
of the country at Training Institute
for Technical Instruction (TITI),
Sanothimi, Bhaktapur.
Development of Primary Eye Care
Text Books:
Two types of text books, one in
English targeting to health workers
working at the sub-health post/
health post level, and another in
Nepali version targeting to Female
Community Health Volunteers
(FCHVs), were developed and
1000 copies printed.
These books have been distributed
to all the eye hospitals, related
organizations and Ministry of Health
as sample copy. Similarly, each of
the participants from sub-health
post/health post who participated
in the primary eye care training
were supplied with the books as
reference book in primary eye
care. The books basically deal
with the major blinding conditions,
problem of blindness & existing
services available, sign/symptoms
of eye diseases, primary treatment
and referral of eye patients to the
nearby eye hospital, etc.
Development & Distribution of
Primary Eye Care Kit Box:
Eye Care Kit Boxes were also
distributed at each of the sub health
post/health post after providing
primary eye care training to the health
post in-charges.
Primary Eye Care Training for
Integration:
A total of 54 health post and sub
health post in-charges received
three days primary eye care training.
Among the total participants, 29
received a refresher course for
three days and 25 health workers
received initial training.
